What does Independence day mean to AgePros?

As AgePros we’ve been thinking a lot about the 4th of July, and what the holiday may mean to our older adult population. It’s important to help older adults participate in all the fun fourth activities: barbeques, fireworks, and parades.

Yet isn’t there an importance to this date that is bigger than any one event? A perspective relevant to every type of AgePro. Caretaker. Therapist. Move manager. Financial advisor. Solopreneur or entrepreneur.

We think so. Freedom and independence.

But really. What does Independence Day have to do with AgePros and their clients?

This fourth of July, it’s important to remember that giving our clients as much freedom and independence we can is just as important as their physical well-being.

The ability to make their own choices. Maintaining a sense of control over their daily activities. Participating in daily tasks. These moments help maintain their self-worth and sense of dignity.

We as AgePros always have our clients’ best interests at heart. But even then, it’s all too easy to do rather than include. One client’s son rearranged his parents’ furniture to make moving about their apartment easier. Sounds great right? It was except the son moved so fast and never asked his parents opinion. By the time he left, his parents head was spinning. A good reminder for all of us to slow down so others can catch up.

So here are a few reminders for all of us on this Independence Day.

  • Make decisions with your clients not for them
  • Help them participate in activities
  • Create personalized care plans
  • Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.

And wising you a happy Independence Day!
