Spreading the word about Memory Cafes.

The number of people projected to be diagnosed with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s Disease, is skyrocketing globally.  With this dramatic growth, comes the exponential need for more dementia caregivers.

As aging industry professionals well know, caregiver burnout, especially caregivers of those with dementia, is an issue of grave concern.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2024 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report provides an in-depth look at the statistics around caregiver burnout. One is that Dementia Caregivers Report High to Very High Stress Due to Caregiving, with 59% reporting emotional stress and 38% reporting physical stress. Link to the full report is below. It is a great resource to share with both your industry peers and even your clients.

The report further confirms that the biggest impact is on spouses who are dementia caregivers.  Data suggests that spouses caring for their loved one with dementia many times die first or have a much greater risk of getting the disease themselves.  Programs that provide respite to these caregivers need to be more available and accessible.  Again, this is not news for those in the aging industry.

Memory Cafes are a free form of respite that may not be on your radar and could be a valuable, dementia friendly resource for your clients.  As described by the Alzheimer’s Association, Memory Cafés are a comfortable, social gathering that allow people experiencing memory loss and a loved one to connect, socialize, and build new support networks. Cafés are currently meeting via Zoom, so grab your computer, tablet, or smartphone and join us for a variety of activities including music, crafts, and more.

Memory Cafes were forced to be virtual during the pandemic. Fortunately, in person options are back.  If you would like to find virtual or local in person Memory Cafes for your clients, go to https://www.memorycafedirectory.com
